St. Luke’s has a well-established preschool program implemented by experienced and caring educators.  The goals of this program are achieved in a structured, yet relaxed environment that guides children towards kindergarten readiness.  These goals are as follows:

1. Emotional and Social
• Providing a secure and nurturing environment.
• Encouraging independence through the development of new friendships away from home.
• Learning compassion and responsibility by caring for each other, class pets and plants.
• Learning social skills by encouraging listening, taking turns, raising hands, following directions, speaking in front of others, working and playing cooperatively with one another.

2. Intellectual
• Using imagination through stories, songs, plays, felt boards, games, role playing, play dough, water, indoor and outdoor play.
• Awareness of surroundings through exposure to their community through visitors to the classroom and field trips.
• Learning about and working with colors, shapes, days, months, calendars, maps, seasons, names and addresses.
• Using numbers through counting, comparing and measuring.
• Using letters through singing, stories and writing their name.

3. Coordination

Admission Policy

Children between the ages of 18 months to 5 years of age are eligible for admission, regardless of race or creed.  Children must meet the social and emotional development levels appropriate with their age.  A certificate of health and immunizations from a doctor must be submitted prior to the first day of school.

Curriculum

The Creative Curriculum is a developmental continuum that lays out the progression of development in each developmental area. These areas include Social/Emotional, Cognitive, Physical, and Language Development. The Creative Curriculum is a roadmap for determing where weach child is developmentally, for tracking each child's progress, and for planning learning experiences. The Creative Curriculum is a comprehensive curriculum with guidance on literacy, mathematics, science, and social studies. By linking curriculum and assessment, teachers can use the information from ongoing assessments to inform their teaching. Children benefit because teachers use what they learn from assessment to adapt instruction. We provide a variety of active and quiet interest areas within which a child can make choices, create, and interact with peers and their environment.
The intent of the early childhood program is to stimulate creativity, curiousity, and interest in learning which will continue beyond the preschool years.
